April 14-18, 2007-- LCA was pleased to again participate in the 2007 Annual Meeting of the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR), held in Los Angeles, CA April 14 – 18, and to be honored as an outstanding advocacy organization at its centennial celebration. AACR was established one hundred years ago by a group of eleven scientists who gathered in Washington, DC to discuss the rapidly growing field of cancer research. This is the genesis of AACR today. Over 18,000 scientists, researchers, doctors and advocates participated in the international conference to share information on collective progress to better understand and ultimately eradicate cancer.
LCA President Laurie Fenton and LCA advocates Mike Stevens (CA), Deb Violette (ME) and Prem Chawla (IL) attended. Prem also represented Joan’s Legacy Foundation at the conference assisting Susan Mantel, its Executive Director, with research gathering. The four day conference was chock full of medical information spanning a wide spectrum including the cancer genome atlas project, translational research, drug development for new and promising anticancer agents, early detection, and cancer biology and metabolism. As Mike said, “it was exciting, overwhelming and made my head spin”!
Mike was selected to participate in the highly regarded “Scientist-Survivor” program especially designed to increase knowledge and awareness and build bridges between the science, survivor and advocacy community to ultimately strengthen cancer research. Deb, who has previously participated in the program, was asked to serve this year as a “program mentor”, a special distinction requiring Deb to be a guide for new participants.
And in acknowledgement of its centennial year, AACR honored the extraordinary accomplishments of individuals and organizations, including Lance Armstrong and Nancy Brinker, founder of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. I am proud to share that LCA also received an award for its “Outstanding contributions and enduring commitment towards the eradication of cancer.”
We look forward to next year’s annual event and hope to include even more LCA advocates in the conference.
