Drug Conference highlights delicate balance between safety and effectiveness
With Congress now considering stiffer approval hurdles for all new
drugs, Lung Cancer Alliance staff Sheila Ross and Maureen Rigney
participated in a high level forum on drug safety in the Capitol
Building last week. HOT TOPIC: emphasizing safety in a drug for, say,
headaches. that will be taken by millions of people is appropriate, but
how do you balance risk and benefit of new drugs for people with end
stage cancer who have run out of options? Mark McClellan, MD and
PhD,former head of the FDA and Medicare, and Janet Woodcock, Deputy FDA
Commissioner were among the panelists at the forum, entitled Drug
Safety:Defining Safe which was hosted by Friends of Cancer Research.
