LCA Asks House Appropriations Committee To Urge Nih And Nci To Address Lung Cancer Comprehensively And With Urgency

August 10, 2010 -- LCA sent a letter to Chairman David Obey(D-WI), the Congressman overseeing both the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies, as well as the full House Appropriations Committee thanking him for supporting a $1 billion increase in the FY11 appropriations for the National Institutes of Health -- of which $162 billion would be directed to NCI – thereby increasing NCI’s total funding level to $5.257 billion.

While grateful – LCA expressed for the record, yet again, that even when research funding has increased, lung cancer continues to be a low research funding priority and lacks any kinds of coordinated plan of action to reduce its mortality.

LCA asked that language be included in the committee report urging NIH and NCI to address lung cancer comprehensively and with urgency. The House Full Committee will need to act upon the Subcommittee report this fall.
